JACK FRUIT-VIETNUM EARLY

Scientific Name: Artocarpus heterophyllus

Variety: Vietnam early

Salient Features: Vietnam early jackfruit is a high-yielding, fastgrowing variety known for its early maturity, often bearing fruit within a year. It produces medium-sized, sweet, fragrant yellow fruits with soft, juicy flesh and a thin rind, making it easier to handle. The tree is a compact, smaller size, suitable for home gardens, and can bear fruit throughout a year “365-day fruiting”.

Soil and climate:

Deep well drained soil is necessary for jack cultivation. Soil pH around 6-7 at the time of planting is desirable. The crop comes up well in the plains and up to an elevation of 1200 m.

Propagation: Budding  

Preparation of field and planting:

Dig pits of 1 m x 1 m x 1 m. Fill up the pits with top soil mixed with 1015 Kg of FYM and 1 Kg of neem cake per pit. Plant preferably grafts during June – December.  

Method of planting and Initial Establishment:

  • Take of planting during cool hours of the day, preferably evening on hotter days.
  • Fill the pit with pit mixture
  • Remove the plastic  without disturbing the root system and not breaking the ball of earth.
  • Transplant the sapling/ graft in the centre of the pit mixture and burying the root system up the color region, and press the soil around the plant
  • Root should be in the soil, Shoot should be in the air,
  • Take care to keep the graft union well above the soil.
  • Provide a stake , which is 2 ft taller than the plant.in the opposite direction of the wind, at a distance of about 2-3 inches.  

Spacing: Row 15 ft. x Plant 15 ft. or 20 x 15 spacing found suitable for Vietnam early Jackfruit

= 193 plants/ Acre or    145 plants / Acre.

Irrigation:

Once in a week till the plant gets established. Thereafter irrigation is given as and when necessary.

Manures and fertilizers:

The manures and fertilizers should be applied in two splits during May – June and September – October.

Plant protection:
Pest

1.Fruit borer: Apply Carbaryl 50 WP @ 2 g/lit.

2. Spittle bug
Spray methyl parathion 50 EC 2ml/lit or Methyl demeton 25 EC @ 2ml/lit. or Phosphamidon 40 SL 2 ml/lit or dust Methyl parathion 2 D or Quinalphos dust 1.5 D. 

Disease
Rhizopus rot
Spray 1 % Bordeaux mixture or Copper oxychloride 2.5 g/lit. Three sprays must be given at 15 days interval.

Harvest
The yield commences from 1st year only.
